Thai Herbal Compress

Herbal compresses are frequently used in Thailand in conjunction with traditional massage. Herbal compresses come in two varieties , hot and cold. Cold compresses are used as first aid to reduce swelling an inflammation, hot compresses are used to treat chronic disease, such as muscle pain.

The compress is used in conjunction with a normal Thai massage, either before or after the treatment, however, they could also be used alone or incorporated into other massage modalities. The deep heat delivered into the body is very effective in combating muscle pain.

Initially the compress is applied very quickly to the body, along the energy lines, working from the extremities to the centre and then back out again, as the compress cools, it can be applied for longer periods (always check the temperature on the back of your hand or elbow first). At the end a compress can be left on the stomach and another under the neck to give a luxurious sensation and deep relaxation.

Herbs commonly used in herbal compress are listed below, typically a compress will include at least one herb from each category, however local herbs can be substituted. In addition essential oils can be used for increases effect, but this is not common in Thailand
